There are an inordinate number of elopements at Byron Bay and the number is on the rise. Let's face it, a wedding can be an expensive exercise.
Couples can fly to Byron, spend the week in champagne accommodation, wine, dine and treat themselves to plenty of us time. From my Celebrant's point of view, the Australian legal aspects can be completed via the internet and land mail.
These days' interviews and chats are even easier with the use of Skype. Most people are busy in their every day life and couples don't even need to visit the area until their wedding day!
Although a wedding sand ceremony, also known as a unity sand ceremony, is not a new idea, it has increased in popularity in recent years as couples move away from traditional rituals such as the unity candle ceremony.
The origins of the ceremony are unclear, but it is thought that it was started either by Hawaiians or Native Americans, and that it symbolises the inseparable nature of marriage. Originally, the bride and groom would each have simply picked up a handful of sand and thrown it into the wind. The grains of sand would have become combined, and would have been impossible to separate, symbolising the couple coming together in marriage.
The modern wedding sand ceremony is usually part of the main wedding ceremony, often taking place just after the couple have been pronounced husband and wife. It is supposed to be their first task together as a married couple.
Here are the four steps to a basic sand ceremony
Top of PageA poem or reading can be recited at the same time as the sand is poured. Three variations on a wedding sand ceremony
3. A children's variation of the sand ceremony is perfect if the couple have children together already, or have children from a previous relationship. Each child has a small vase with coloured or white sand, and they pour this into the central vase just before the couple finish pouring in their sand. This provides a layer where the couple's and children's sands are mixed. The children can then pour the rest of their sand on top of the couple's sand. Wedding sand ceremonies are ideal for outdoor or informal weddings, and work especially well for beach weddings where some of the sand can come directly from the venue giving it even more significance. If you aren't getting married at the beach, wedding sand ceremony kits can be ordered with just about any colour sand. The central vase can be sealed with wax once the ceremony is over, and makes a wonderful keepsake of your wedding day.
'Like colours of the rainbow we're all different and special, valuable, and precious. Therefore it is only fitting that you be shown as an important part of this marriage - after all marriage is really about family. These containers of sand represent each of you and your importance in this family. I will ask each of you to now pour some of your sand into the jar. Each of you taking turns with pouring the sands of time. The sand has now been joined together and cannot be isolated. These grains of sand can never be separated and poured again into the individual containers, so will your family be a moulding of 5 individual personalities, bonded together. You are joined together today, not only in marriage, but also as a family. We will now proceed to sign the Register and Marriage Certificates…'

The renewal of vows is as meaningful as a marriage ceremony and on many occasions even more so. For example, a couple may have lived through the ups and downs of daily life and always put each other first this strengthened their love over time.
The renewal of vows can extend to the ritualising of gratitude and confirmation of a rock solid bond. A couple may be re-establishing something that they lost and want to celebrate their reunion. A couple may want to include the renewal of vows as an addition to milestone wedding anniversary.
Whether the ceremony is public or private, ritualizing the celebration of love between two people is a significant milestone in the showing of commitment to each other. Renewal of Vows are treated much the same as commitment ceremonies.
As your Celebrant, I take it on myself to ensure that you are enriched by the experience and that you find it personalised. This is a time when you are making promises to one another so you need to take your time to turn your feelings into meaningful words. Words that will shape your future together. This sounds a little serious but you can still keep it fun.
Whether you are having guests or not be sure to explore the possibilities of including readings, poems, themes (costumes), music (live or mp3), dance, video (mp4), photos or comic artists, etc. Most of all, it is your day, so make sure it is your way.
Second Marriage Ceremonies are often more complicated than the first. There may be additional considerations for offspring, ex partners, in laws and relatives by the first marriage. Don't let your first wedding become a benchmark or something to compare against in your wedding plans. This is a celebration of a fresh start, a new life, new love.
This is an opportunity to express your feelings of that new love to one another with optimism and hope for your life ahead. Your ceremony can have more meaning and stronger feeling than anything you have previously experienced. You have built a wealth of life experience and have not only survived the trauma of the past but have risen above it all.

The participants may be from a variety of situations for instance gay couples or divorced couples that have an ongoing relationship. Sometimes widowed or older couples want to share a relationship that will be recognized in legal terms when it comes to the realization of wills.
The laws vary between states but the significance of a commitment ceremony on your relationship status can be researched with the Registrar of Birth Deaths and Marriages in your State.
An interesting quote from Massachusetts Supreme Court Chief Justice Margaret H. Marshall "Marriage is a vital social institution. The exclusive commitment of two individuals to each other nurtures love and mutual support; it brings stability to our society. For those who choose to marry, and for their children, marriage provides an abundance of legal, financial, and social benefits. In return, it imposes weighty legal, financial, and social obligations….Without question, civil marriage enhances the "welfare of the community." It is a "social institution of the highest importance." …
Marriage also bestows enormous private and social advantages on those who choose to marry. Civil marriage is at once a deeply personal commitment to another human being and a highly public celebration of the ideals of mutuality, companionship, intimacy, fidelity, and family.
Because it fulfils yearnings for security, safe haven, and connection that express our common humanity, civil marriage is an esteemed institution, and the decision whether and whom to marry is among life's momentous acts of self-definition."
